How Much Dirt Do I Need?

"How much dirt do I need?"

This is something that I have spoken about before on here. There are so many who are shocked by the amount of dirt needed on any particular project. I have had many who have called me for a quote over the phone for a dirt pad or driveway. I know how to calculate the figures on a piece of property that is on grade. And I am honest with them. I can give you a guestimate. But I ask that they do not hold me to it.

Every project is different because no two properties are the same. We do not live in flat lands. There are places here that are softer than others. A person could look at their property and say that it is flat. In reality, though, 75 percent of those customers do not see what the ground is doing.

I am one of those people who did not see it at first either on my piece of property, shamefully. I started with land that needed to be cleared. I picked the ideal spot. To the naked eye, it looked pretty level. Then we started bringing in the dirt. It took a little bit more than I anticipated. The lesson I learned, and that I can reiterate more to our customers is, that knowing the grade of the land is vital when putting in a house pad or anything that requires dirt.

We are putting in a dirt pad for a customer at the moment. We had given them a quote for putting the pad where they originally wanted the building. The owner of Kirkpatrick Construction, Greg, got to the job and looked at the property a little bit more. He suggested where to put the building which would cut the cost pretty much in half. This is because of how out of level the land was at the original place.
